The XVROS Project

What is XVROS?

XVROS stands for the "eXtensible Virtual Reality Operating System". The project's goal is to develop a collection of open protocols for building distributed online virtual reality environments.

Why XVROS?

There are advantages to not relying on Trusted Clients

Most online distributed virtual reality systems rely on "trusted clients" to divulge appropriate information to the players and keep other information secret. This is unfortunate because it provides the basis for many cheats and simultaneously discourages the development of third party clients.

Server Federation and Delegation can lead to REALLY BIG worlds!

Current MMORPG systems do not have a way to divide their worlds into separate domains which are maintained by different organizations. The total amount of content is limited to the output of a single design department. This content is then replicated into multiple "shards" to support the client load. Characters on different shards can never meet.

Imagine if the world was much bigger, and all of the characters could meet ... this requires federation and delegation.
